Faithful to the winter appointment, Canon presented the news for spring 2010: alongside the compact, video cameras and printers, the protagonist of the event was certainly the new Canon EOS 550D SLR. Based on a new sensor with integrated cleaning system in the low-pass filter in 18-megapixel APS-C format, which shares only the resolution data with that of the EOS 7D, it entrusts 14-bit image processing to the DIGIC 4 processor, which can be burst at 3.7fps, with sensitivity from 100 to 6400 ISO and up to 12.800 ISO in boost mode.
This model does not replace any previous camera and goes to top the EOS 500D, with a range that starts from the EOS 1000D, passes for 450D and 500D and now sees the new EOS 550D to act as a bridge with the prosumer EOS 50D. Focusing is entrusted to the new TTL-CT-SIR 9-point CMOS sensor, with a high sensitivity f / 2.8 center point.
The pentaspecchio viewfinder with a coverage of 95% and a magnification of 0.87x seemed to us wide and bright, while the new 3-inch diagonal display and 1040k resolution dots offers excellent support for Live-View. The integrated flash has guide number 13 and the shutter offers sync up to 1 / 200sec.
Interesting developments in video: in addition to allowing recording of Full-HD movies (1920x1080p) at user-selectable frame rate, the EOS 550D offers a video crop recording mode, which limits the resolution to 640×480 pixels, but offers an enlargement equal to 7x.
Among the connectors we find the jack for the external stereo microphone and HDMI-CEC, which allows you to control the camera remotely. Interesting the adoption of an SD / SDHC slot compatible with the new SDXC memory cards that can soon provide storage space in the order of terabytes. EOS 550D will be on sale from March 2010 to the suggested retail price of 750 euros VAT included only body and 850 euros VAT included in kit with EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens.
